U.S. Montgomery Land Office - lists of patents, 1870-1880.

Land patents were issued to individual purchasers only after a thorough check of the records revealed that all payments had been received and the records relating to the purchase were in order. The U.S. General Land Office sent the patents to district land office Registers who were responsible for delivery of the patents to the purchaser. By 1879 all U.S. Land Offices in Ala. had been consolidated at the Montgomery Land Office, except the Huntsville Land Office, which remained autonomous until 1905 when it, too, merged with Montgomery. Volume SG5222 contains numerous lists of patents on file at the Montgomery Land Office. Included are lists of patents forwarded to the U.S. General Land Office as per instructions of 1869 Nov. 4, patents forwarded to the Huntsville Land Office as per instructions of 1872 Jan. 29, a list of homestead patents received, and lists of patents on file, which are divided by former land districts. A separate list is maintained for patents issued for land sold at each of the following former land offices: Centre, Demopolis, Lebanon, Elba, Greenville, Huntsville, Mardisville, St. Stephen's, Sparta, and Tuscaloosa. The lists only include the patent number. Volume SG5303 contains unidentified lists of patent numbers for the former land offices of Centre, Greenville, Montgomery, Elba, St. Stephen's and Tuscaloosa. These volumes illustrates the complexities of administering public lands after consolidation at the Montgomery Land Office.
